Gentle Tooth Extractions
Though it’s always our last resort, sometimes the best treatment is to remove a tooth. For example, if your tooth is so decayed that it’s putting your surrounding teeth at risk of infection, the ideal approach is to extract it and replace it with a dental implant or a bridge.
Extraction may be necessary in cases of severe trauma or infection. It can also be used as part of a comprehensive program of orthodontic correction, removing one or more teeth in an overcrowded jawbone to accommodate braces or some other type of treatment.
The Tooth Extraction Process
Each of your teeth is held in place by a ligament that runs along the outer edge of the socket. Extraction is a delicate procedure where either Dr. Catherine Yazar or Dr. Mustafa Yazar will gently expand the socket and separate your tooth from the ligament.
After a tooth is removed, the empty socket increases your risk of gum infection. Your jaw will also begin to deteriorate around the empty socket because it lacks the healthy stimulation that occurs with chewing. That’s why we generally advise replacing your tooth as soon as possible.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth are special molars in the very back of your upper and lower arches. They usually don’t emerge until your late teens or early twenties. Because they emerge so late, there’s often not enough room in your jaw for the wisdom teeth to erupt, causing the tooth to become impacted.
Without treatment, an impacted wisdom tooth can result in swelling and tenderness of the gums or even severe pain. They also become very difficult to clean, increasing your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
Though some patients will never need their wisdom teeth removed, this is rare. Most patients have their wisdom teeth extracted during their late teens or early twenties. Dentists choose this age because the roots of your teeth aren’t fully formed yet and your jawbone isn’t as dense, resulting in easier extraction and faster recovery.
